Secretary Build Question - AgGEM - 11-22-2018 Thinking about doing a secretary like this: [attachment=14510] I am curious about the lid hinge(s). Anything special about them? RE: Secretary Build Question - sniper - 11-22-2018 Popular Woodworking, Aug 2000, built a secretary similar to your picture. They used these hinges from Rockler https://www.rockler.com/single-pin-hinge-select-option RE: Secretary Build Question - Phil S. - 11-22-2018 My secretary has regular butt hinges. I think just about any good quality hinge with a tight pin so there isn't any slop would work. I see some that have a built-in strap to keep the hinge from over extending, but then you have that to work around on the surface of your desk. Mine is supported by a couple of oak sticks about 3/4" square. They look sort of flimsy, but they work fine and I haven't seen any indication that they flex or otherwise might want to fail. Here are some hinges from Horton that they recommend for that purpose - https://www.horton-brasses.com/H-71-H-71.asp Phil RE: Secretary Build Question - AgGEM - 11-22-2018 Thanks folks! Thank you Snipe and Phil for the links. Most helpful! Ag RE: Secretary Build Question - hbmcc - 11-22-2018 The image shows lopers, so there shouldn't be an issue with any butt hinge, if the sliders are installed. RE: Secretary Build Question - handi - 11-23-2018 If you are building one with the pull out supports for the desk top, the hinge does not need to have holds or stops built in. But you also want to avoid the hinge barrels being in the way when using the desk. Single barrel sewing machine hinges are a great option: https://www.rockler.com/hardware/hinges/sewing-machine-hinges RE: Secretary Build Question - AgGEM - 11-23-2018 (11-23-2018, 06:03 PM)handi Wrote: If you are building one with the pull out supports for the desk top, the hinge does not need to have holds or stops built in. But it is something I have been thinking about for a very long time. I have not built anything since last winter. Very bad. But the shop is in tip - top shape, just waiting for a job. The last thing I did build was a Shaker wash stand and I enjoyed the build and the result immensely. Somewhat similar, the wash stand and the secretary. And I have an emotional connection to my mothers long gone and beloved secretary, which was more along traditional Chippendale styling. So I need to do something, and this seems fitting. If it is a go, I will post it. Ag |
