Couple last minute gifts... - Big Dave - 12-26-2018 I needed a couple last minute gifts for a friend & her two daughters. My friend gets the walnut keepsake box, and her girls get the spalted quartersawn sycamore boxes. The sycamore was an unexpected gift from a WN friend. I really like this place... Happy New Year, everyone! Dave RE: Couple last minute gifts... - fishhh4 - 12-26-2018 Look real good.... love the design. RE: Couple last minute gifts... - Gary G™ - 12-26-2018 Beautiful workmanship. RE: Couple last minute gifts... - Wizard of Oz - 12-26-2018 Very nice!!!! Your friend and daughters are very lucky. RE: Couple last minute gifts... - fredhargis - 12-27-2018 Love it! I've been trying to get some qtr sawn sycamore for the last 3 years and can't find a yard that has it. RE: Couple last minute gifts... - wood2woodknot - 12-27-2018 LAST MINUTE (x3) ??? Sure looks like a like a lot of production time; that would take me forever. Well done. Are the tops veneer (marquetry) or parquet (solid strips) ? RE: Couple last minute gifts... - 2beast - 12-27-2018 Nicely done Lots of quality workmanship, especially on those tops. Bravo Is that spray suede inside? RE: Couple last minute gifts... - Big Dave - 12-27-2018 Thanks guys! The tops are made with solid wood diamonds set/glued in place individually. A simple tablesaw jig makes cutting them rather easy, and doing a quarter of the top at a time really doesn't take too long to set the pieces in place. The "hardest" part is making sure you use the right species in the right place and checking grain direction. The smaller lids took maybe an hour each, the larger a little longer only due to having more diamonds... They're all lined with spray-in flocking, although my "spray-in" device is the cardboard pump they make for that purpose. It usually works pretty well as long as you use enough "glue"... Thanks again for the nice comments! Maybe a picture of the jig or process? I googled spray in flocking and the results centered around Christmas trees. RE: Couple last minute gifts... - Stwood_ - 12-27-2018 Flocking gun kit. https://www.rockler.com/mini-flocker-applicator-for-suede-tex-fibers?sid=V9146?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PL&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0pnW5eDA3wIVCAVpCh1GnQ1SEAQYASABEgKFsvD_BwE And there are also higher end, more expensive guns. |
