plane and a rebate plane?
I am thinking the rebate plane can do what a shoulder plane can do to right? So if you could only have or afford one which one would you use?

Rebate planes are used for making rabbits. The shoulder plane is used more for trueing tenons, rabbits, etc.

The bed angle is different between the two.

Arlin, in addition to the above, most shoulder planes are designed to be used on their side - and the side is precision ground 90 degrees to the sole, and the plane blade is a few thousands wider than the body so the plane can be used either side down and still cut square and the full width. You can use a shoulder plane as a rebate plane, though rebate planes often come with fences so the width of cut can be adjusted, and it won't be as comfortable to use because there normally is not a handle in the back.
