What I've found out about vacuum chucking - hairy - 05-09-2019

And it's not all good. I found a pump on c/l 4 years ago, and now I'm getting around to doing something with it. It came off of a piece of X ray equipment, max vacuum is about 22 in Hg. I added the manifold, gauge, hoses and fittings. Not as good as an A/C pump, but should suffice.  Yeah, I know.

I have so far made 2 chucks and 2 adapters , and only 1 will pull a vacuum. I suspect the bearings. I thought these would work, maybe they will.

This is the foam.

The flat disc with the black foam is the only 1 that works. I turned it on, placed a 3 lb. coffee can on it, got the 22 in Hg, and could not pull it off. Not even close.

The deep chuck would only pull 2 in Hg at first, I wrapped it with painters tape and got it down to 6 in Hg. I took off the tape and painted it with TB3, still 6 in Hg. I can only partly blame the bearing here.

I have some corian epoxied together, will try it soon.I used 2 part epoxy to attach a bearing to either lamp rod or a brass fitting. I thought I had a pretty good seal. I'm going to try to come up with a way to pressure test with compressed air.

I gave up on making just an adapter, and ordered 1 from Robust. They have to modify it to fit. I got a 10 year old Sweet 16 that's still as sweet as the day I brought it home 10 years ago. I'm going to just make few chucks.

I'd like to hear your success stories, and your fails. I might try MDF as a chuck body.

I never had any luck making my own vacuum chucks. I built the vacuum pump from Joe Woodworker and tried to make several different chucks. I finally broke down and bought a Holdfast setup and never looked back. It works great!

I bit the bullet years back and bought one way Chuck's work great but pricey. Gave up on foam. Use rubber Chucky ones

If I was making my own chucks I'd make them to fit rubber chuckys
