Another "whutszis?" thread - Wild Turkey - 06-05-2019

I adopted a Delta 990 the other day.  It has a strange mechanism on the side.

I'm thinking it's some kind of a rip width gauge.

Consider this a bump, I got Nuttin!

Have you tried it (with the power off) and got any idea what it might do? You could be right.

With the latch engaged it move the carriage back and forth depending on direction you crank.

With saw set for crosscut it would be a controlled feed cut.

With saw turned 90 degrees you could set rip width precisely.

But that's a guess.

Probably a very good guess. I would also guess that its a diy mod, I've never seen something like that before and I've had one or two of those Delta 900 series saws.

Looks factory made to me.

How about a manual power feed?? Lol

Looks like it would make shallow dados a lot safer!

Purely a guess, what about a fine tune adjuster for ripping?  I've done ripping on a RAS and it's not that easy to nail the adjustment if you're not on the money the first time.

It appears like a homemade quick adjustment mechanism. I would think that when it is disengaged you would be able to move the carriage on that axis of travel without cranking the leadscrew. When engaged the lead screw would be used for the final adjustment.

To me it looks to serve the function of a half nut on a metal lathe, witch engages and disengages a lead screw. My guess would be to fine tune the width for ripping.
