Got any sycamore in the mix? Quarter saw it's a very pretty wood.
Second the vote for craigslist. Lots of good lathes, vintage and recent, show up.
And once you start turning you'll never look at a piece of wood the same way again

Pen state industries ia another good place for supplies. The also have an excellent video on turning pins to help you get started.
