French Feet Finished - Hank Knight - 04-09-2020

How's that for alliteration? :>)

The Federal slant top desk I'm building has French Feet. They're one of the things I like best about the style. I've wondered for years how they are done, but I never found any good written instructions on the procedure. A friend, who is a much better woodworker than I am, taught me how; and I've applied the lessons to my desk. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Here are some photos:

Hank, that looks great.  OK, how did you make them?  I mean, you didn't cut away all that material on the side just to get the little flare on the foot did you?

Hi, John.

Thanks for the compliment. The process is fairly long. I posted lengthy descriptions of it on both WoodCentral and Lumberjocks with lots of photos. I think they put everybody to sleep. They generated very little interest, so I thought I'd spare WoodNetters and forego the long post here. If you're interested, here's the link to my post on Lumberjocks:

Beautiful and highly skilled work, Hank. I've not seen the process for French feet before. Thanks for the introduction.

Fancy footwork! Thanks for posting the link.

Hank, I did not fall asleep. Read it several times over. Between your narrative and photos the process was totally clear.

Thanks OF. I don't think a lot of people have the stamina to follow this through. I almost didn't. :>) I hope this will be helpful to some. I searched for this kind of description for years with no luck.

Thanks very much for the follow-up Hank.  Very clever how the side is flared.
