Oil finish--or something else? - overland - 12-05-2020

I just picked up a used Maloof-style rocker that has a thin, low-luster finish. I'm thinking maybe it's an oil/wax finish of the kind Maloof used on the real article, but I've also seen lacquer finishes with the same look. How can I tell what I'm dealing with? I need to fix a few scuffs and scratches.

Dip a qtip in lacquer thinner and rub it in an inconspicuous place and see if it softens the finish.  If so, it is lacquer.  If not ,  check with other chemicals

Lacquer thinner at Lowe's

It used to be in paint department -- you may have to ask where it is now
