Small Mortise chisels - Ron Brese - 03-29-2021

A set of three custom mortise chisels. The gentleman that requested these was quite specific about his needs. I was a bit worried about the 1/16” chisel remaining flat thru the heat treating process but all turned out well.
Sizes are 1/8”, 3/32, and 1/16. Handle material is resin infused figured maple.

Those handles don't look very comfortable. Hard to avoid hitting knuckles. I like 5 1/2 or 6 inch handles; Andre Roubo mentions 5-6 inches of ash or hornbeam.

Stunning chisels.  Having just made a significantly less pretty 1/32 detail chisel I am impressed with how nicely you got those to come out and heat treat.  Which steel did you use?

The steel is Presco O-1. I left them about 6 thousandths oversized, I normalized them twice before quenching and placed each chisel in a milling vise just after quenching. 

Even though I had a tolerance of + or - 5 thousandths I was able to grind them in within 1/2 thou of size.
