Triton Duo Dowel - 2Goober - 10-06-2021
I'm looking for someone that has used this tool. I have a LOT of dowels to drill and I think this might save some time. I'd love to use get a Domino 500 but they be a little out of my budget for the amount of use it would get.

The Rockler dowel jig + high-speed electric drill. DeWalt makes a corded 1/4" drill that spins at 4,000 rpm and will drill holes significantly faster than any non-corded drill or most other corded drills. Most go to 1,800 - 2,800 rpm. You will have to buy drill bits with a reduced shank.
A corded drill is no disadvantage for dowel work where you are not moving from station to station. Run an extension cord to an overhead hook and plug into that. That way the cord will never get in your way.

I like dowel joinery. I have a couple of really good jigs. One is sheet goods specific and is very fast to use on cabinet carcasses.
The other one is from England and is more versatile.
I have made face frames using dowels. I will say that I like the idea of doweled joints more than I like the actual dowel joinery on face frames.
I have made also half lap joints with square dowel cross pins. It looked nice to me, but no one else commented.
Nowadays I have "gone with the flow" and I have a very good pocket hole jig (Porter-Cable, now discontinued), and I now use that for face frames. It seems almost universal now.
The Triton had some problematic reviews as I recall. I would go with the Rockler and a really fast drill.

For the bits for this, you could buy a bit set that has the impact shank and chuck it in that drill. It might be easier to find. I have a set so I can drill holes with my impact driver in a pinch (which usually translates to on a ladder).
I have a Task doweling jig, which I like pretty well. If you get one, get one that can have an insert at all four positions. This will be better for doors so you can use larger dowels. I also have the Jessum jig, which I like really well. It doesn't center the dowels, but that's usually not a problem. It's very well made. I also have a couple of cheapies from many years ago that I would not recommend.
I'm shocked that no company has made an affordable version of a doweling joiner that works well. You'd think it would sell well. I've heard similar bad things about the Triton. Mafell makes one, but the price is about the same as a Domino.

Do a search for Phil Thein, makes a nice small jig. He also has reviewed many of the jigs out there. Their also is the pricey one

I have a CTM jig designed for sheet goods. And a Joint Genie. I had to import both. I like them both. The CTM is great for cabinet work.
