Would anyone be interested in a Stanley No 51 Shooting Plane? - Yodascaretaker - 12-07-2021

Just trying to throw out some feelers to see if anyone might be interested in such a thing. It’s one of the more expensive planes out there, but I have a buddy who was talking about possibly selling his.

Does anyone know what the market rate is for them? As far as I know it is in great condition with no damage. Apparently that is rare because the frogs broke regularly.

I have seen posts here of people very happy about finding one at prices that were higher than I would have expected (yeah, I am cheap).

For a user, I would certainly be challenged to pay more for a used Stanley than a new LN or LV.

Beyond that, I will be interested in seeing what others have to say.

This thread is a little bit off-topic for SnS, but we will give it a few days here.
If it is still active Friday, I will move it to handtools to possibly get you more visibility.

Agree.  I'd be interested as well.

I personally would rather go for a Lie Nielsen because of the durability issues with the Stanley. Those are $595 now.

You said that you’ve heard about people paying quite a bit for them and being happy with it. What kind of price are we talking about? $700 or so? I found one for sale on Craigslist. The guy wanted $900. He was also selling a LN one. https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/tls/d/boston-lie-nielsen-stanley-hand-planes/7408712174.html

Sorry, but that level of detail did not stick in memory.

Here are a couple of points of reference from Jim Bode's site:

https://www.jimbodetools.com/products/extra-fine-stanley-no-51-chute-board-plane-92087

That is not nearly as high as I'd expected.
