Here's an idea, a little different take on Joe 1086's suggestion. Use 3" X 1 1/2" X 3/16' aluminum T sections let into the uprights and secured with epoxy and/or through dowels. The table top is secured with screws through the 3" flange on either side of the upright members. You can make the "T" sections as long as you like. It would be much sturdier than Z clips. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for all the ideas; it's clear there are many potential ways to go about this.  I gave him some sketches of 1/4" x 3" x 3" aluminum plate with slotted screw holes to screw into the top of the base and let into the table top.  He can cut those on his CNC and use a simple template to route the pockets in the underside of the top.  We'll see how he does. 

I'm curious to see how he does making a trammel and using his router to cut the top into a circle.
