Source for 9/32" Masonry Bit? - grwold - 02-15-2023
I'm hanging some shelving in my basement on cinder block walls so picked up this package of Red Head Poly-Set screws with anchors. The package is clearly, and multiply, marked that a 1/4" drill bit is required. No problem, I say, I have that bit already!
Turns out, 1/4" is too small. Witness the mangled anchor in the image. So, I call Red Head (actually, Illinois Tool Works) tech support. Despite the clear package labeling, the tech support guy tells me HIS specs say these anchors, for #12 screws, need a 9/32" bit.

I've searched HD, Lowes, Ace, and Amazon. No one carries a 9/32" masonry bit. There were a few hits on twist & metal bits, but masonry all jumped from 1/4" to 5/16".
Is there a source for 9/32" masonry bits out there?

The solution that occasionally works for me, other than wobbling the drill bit, is hammering on a started screw in the plug which kind of pulls it in rather than pushing it...
I wonder if keeping the plugs in the freezer might stiffen them up a bit...

Drill your holes with the bit you have. Whittle a piece of wood to a point and hammer it into the hole. Insert screw through bracket and install into wood. Throw away cheap plastic anchor.

McMaster-ful! Yes, they have them, in stock! And they're a short drive down the highway, as well.
I've gone over several times for other things, but didn't think to look for bits. Thank you!

Since you already have the plugs/screws this might be meaningless, but this seems like a great application for Tapcons or equal...

I started with some Confast screws, but they immediately stripped their holes. There's another thread here where the consensus was pretty clear, use a hammer drill for the hole (did that) and an impact drill for the screw (did that, too). Maybe it was failed technique (are we supposed to push hard on that screw, to force it in?), but that's when I got the anchors.
