Wood Insert for Hardwood - Jack01 - 03-04-2023

I am working on a project which will need wood inserts
I am not familiar with wood insert , looking for some help

I would like to use 5/16 thread size insert which will go into Red oak.

1st I looked in to this but realize these are for soft wood.

Soft wood

Then looked for Hard wood and found these, which are brass.

Hardwood

Brass is soft material, will these work in Red oak ? any other options ?

Thanks

I have used the brass inserts several times.  Getting them to start straight can be tricky.  The "gizmo" they sell for installing, is well worth the money.

I’ve used brass in hardwoods.
You have to drill a proper sized pilot.
There are several ways to drive the inserts in straight; I used a drill press on some and a ratchet on others.

I made a block from a piece of scrap 2x4. Drill a hole for the size insert desired. Second through hole for a matching bolt. Run the bolt down and double nut it. Thread the insert onto the bolt snug to the double nut. Place over a pre drilled hole and use a ratchet to drive it in.

Thanks Carry

I got these from Amazon and they work great.

I have had some luck with waxing the insert threads for hardwood. There is an argument that anything making them easier to screw in would also make them easier to back out. But in practice, I haven't had any back out on my high use rifle racks made of hard maple. It was hard enough to get them in there even with the wax; I doubt they are coming out any time soon.
