He says cedar but looks like pine to me Low grade wood (#2 common, knots, and other defects often found in deck wood) will be hard to identify after years of being weathered and sun bleached. The best way is to get a sample and dress it until you're down to good wood. Cedar species will not smell like pine. Generally the cedars will be lighter in weight. Photographs of the wood may help eliminate some possibilities, but physical examination will give the most sure results. Under the right lighting, a photograph of certain cedars and certain pines will look very similar. |
