What is this saw? - Derek Cohen - 05-18-2024 I have this combination saw by Disston & Son. What is the correct name for this saw? How many are there out there? Anyone actually use one? And value? (I am having a clear out of unused tools). One side is around 14 tpi (I have not counted the teeth) and could be used for dovetailing. The other side has teeth around 11 tpi and could be used for tenons. The handle has lost the lower horn, so do not be confused by this. The way it works is that the plate is loosened by undoing a lever, sliding it out, flipping it over, and returning it to the handle. Here cutting with the fine teeth (they are reasonably sharp, but could do with a touch up). Regards from Perth Derek RE: What is this saw? - bandit571 - 05-18-2024 Hmmm.. [attachment=51129] Disston's version of an Bishop No. 10 Adjustable Hand saw.. The one hanging in the middle.. You can also take the saw plate out, turn it over..depending on whether you need a rip or a crosscut saw....and the bar it slides up and down in, can also be used as a depth stop.. Atkins relied on coarse, unsharpened teeth to hold the end of the saw plate in place...Disston chose to just add a bolt. Have used my No. 10 mainly as a Dovetail saw, with the bar acting as a depth stop...have not used the coarse Rip teeth, yet.. RE: What is this saw? - Derek Cohen - 05-18-2024 Thanks Steven. i thought this would interest you and get a reply. This is a Disston & Sons #14 (from the faint etch). Rareness and use? Value (if any)? Regards from Perth Derek RE: What is this saw? - bandit571 - 05-19-2024 Hopefully, these are better photos... [attachment=51152] Handle hardware for mine..slotted screw is just that..a #12 wood screw.. There IS a Patent date on the other side.. [attachment=51153] "Patented 9-06" stamped into the handle.. [attachment=51154] Same Patent date on the bar....Says the saw is Hand Made, in Cincinnati, Ohio Right now? [attachment=51155] Just hanging out..with a Mr. Jackson Backsaw, and a Disston D8 Panel saw...
