60 1/2 block plane question - RBohn - 11-24-2024

I have not been active for several years. I just went through sharpening, cleaning and adjusting my planes
Everything works like it did years ago except for the 60 1/2 SW block

There appears to be no sweet spot regarding tension for adjusting the position of the blade. Within a very small adjustment of the tension wheel I find that the tension is either completely off or too tight to make adjustments.

Any ideas?

Hmmm..

Both of these are Stanley No. 60-1/2 block planes....which tension "bolt" are you working on?

These in the back?  Or...

That slotted screw?   As the cam makes things final tightness....Big Brass knob is for the adjustable mouth...

My guess would be that slotted screw/bolt...so, turn it a 1/4 turn to loosen it, just like on a bench plane...adjust the depth you need, and then adjust the cam and the bolt until tight...

I did a bad job of describing the issue. I cannot find a good balance of adjustment of the large brass horizontal wheel at the back of the plane.

Try waxing  {or lubing} the cap iron and the blade ramp...friction may be causing the problem...Make sure that the last adjustment ADVANCES the blade forward.....NOT retracts it.
