Kreg Mortise mate - JDuke - 11-29-2024 Looks like kreg has entered the loose tenon joinery game. Just saw a video for the Kreg Mortise mate, looks like they are trying to make a version of the loose tenon drill guide that Jessem sold as the mortise mill. I have personally had a bunch of different ways to cut tenons over the years. 2 hollow chisel mortises and before that a drill press adapter kit. The woodtek matchmaker multifunction but did mortises. The Leigh FMT. Several dowel jigs even one really good one that was over $200 The pantorouter by Mathias wandel, built one and then bought a used one. Several router jigs, The Jessem mortise mill. These were all things I bought trying to avoid spending the high price of the Festool Domino. As you can see, I would have been ahead on cost just buying the Festool, unless you consider that I did make a profit buying and selling some of the above. But I still have the pantorouter, the Jessem (in a box collecting dust hasn’t been used in years), and the dowel jig. Eventually I did break down and found a used DF500 domino and bought it for about 2/3 the cost of new at the time or about $800 That was my first Festool, and since then I have bought several more. If you’re on a tight budget, I can see the value of the Kreg but at $300 if your budget is that tight, you probably would be better served with a good router jig. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth. Duke RE: Kreg Mortise mate - jteneyck - 11-29-2024 If you are on a budget, build one of my Horizontal Router Mortisers for less than $100. It will do any mortise you want on the ends or edges of your workpiece, plus a whole bunch more, quickly, accurately, and safely. John RE: Kreg Mortise mate - museumguy - 11-29-2024 I made one about 30 years ago. I have no idea where it went. I do remember using it and it did a great job. That must have been your own or someone else's design. Mine has only been around for about 13 years. RE: Kreg Mortise mate - CARYinWA - 11-29-2024 The video I saw said that Jessem helped Kreg with their design and that Jessem will eventually phase theirs out. That sounds weird because Jessem had one a long time ago. I bought one when they were clearing them out and they disappeared only to com back redesigned. Anyone can alter your advert. Regards from Perth Derek RE: Kreg Mortise mate - Handplanesandmore - 12-10-2024 Both the Jessem and Kreg mortise jigs remind me of Lee Valley April Fools' product releases. Anyone who is really serious about M&T or loose tenons will avoid those drilling jigs at all cost. Even if you paid me $300 (and as part of the contract, I had to use it in all my loose tenon projects), I wouldn't take it! |
