spindle roughing gouge - DaveLeard - 01-13-2025 What is the earliest reference to the spindle roughing gouge? I'm looking for a magazine article, a textbook or a catalog cut. Include anything that recommends using a gouge ground straight across for roughing. RE: spindle roughing gouge - Dave in Denver - 01-19-2025 Not sure if this is helpful or not. My woodturning club just had a demo from Stuart Batty and he said that he was talking to Craft Supplies back in the day, who were bemoaning that they received so many complaints about broken gouges. Stuart said he told them to change the name of the gouge to Spindle Roughing Gouge in their catalog, and then if they did that, everyone would call it that and would know not to use it for bowls. Maybe if you track down old versions of their catalog you can verify that. RE: spindle roughing gouge - MGoBlue1984 - 01-22-2025 That term used to ignite fierce arguments in this forum. Corrected the autocorrect induced typo RE: spindle roughing gouge - DaveLeard - 01-27-2025 I am slow replying because I was distracted by a record snowfall here in south Alabama. Interesting comment about Stuart Batty. I should start a conversation with Craft Supply on this topic. I don't really understand the comment “That term used to ignore fierce arguments in this forum." Please advise. RE: spindle roughing gouge - fredhargis - 01-27-2025 Maybe it was "ignite" incorrectly auto corrected. ![]() RE: spindle roughing gouge - DaveLeard - 01-29-2025 ahhh.....Autocorrect! Makes sense now, thanks. RE: spindle roughing gouge - MGoBlue1984 - 01-29-2025 Fixed the autocorrect - thanks. RE: spindle roughing gouge - MKepke - 01-29-2025 Here's what I got.. ..back in a 1992 edition of the Peter Child book "The Craftsman Woodturner", he refers to the "roughing out gouge" several times. Per Google Books " A gouge , and especially the roughing - out gouge , is a tool made to do a specific job and will do it by itself if allowed . But a learner - turner can make hard work of it . Unfortunately I can't get a look in a 1971 edition to confirm. -Mark RE: spindle roughing gouge - DaveLeard - 01-30-2025 Good information! I found the 1971 version of that book on the Internet Archive and will be going through it in detail, when I get a chance. RE: spindle roughing gouge - DaveLeard - 02-01-2025 I can’t search in the internet archive copy of The 1971 version of Child's book but I managed to find a reference to “spindle roughing gouge” and a photograph on page 162.The photograph shows a large gouge ground straight across, the configuration we accept as a spindle roughing gouge. I will be watching this thread to see if anyone comes up with an earlier reference. I appreciate everyone's interest. |
