Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-14-2025 Because...this rack is not working out.. [attachment=53479] Except...that rack only has a single, SMALL hinge at one end ( red circled area) and... [attachment=53480] You need a pair of Kevlar Gloves to reach in there and pull a plane out... Since I went out and bought a stack of "Lumbah".. [attachment=53481] Maybe I can build a box to house the 11 Mortise Chisels...and re-use the rack? [attachment=53482] First things first....this is way too long and way too FAT....too long is easy enough to fix.. [attachment=53483] One half will be for the 6 Skinny Mortise chisels.. [attachment=53484] 1/4" and narrower ones. Trim any excess off the ends. The 5 fat chisels? [attachment=53485] Did not need 6 holes...square to mark where to cut off the excess. "Plan"? Is to hang this rack on the inside of a case's door....so, it CAN be a bit shorter than the other one, which will get attached to the back of the case. That takes care of the Length problem...next up...weight watchers for Racks.. Stay tuned... RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-14-2025 I ran the 2 racks through the tablesaw...to remove as much as I could without hitting a screw.. [attachment=53486] Which I tend removed, anyway....reset the fence, and ripped off the counter bores, then reset and ripped the same amount off the other edge...the one face that wasn't sawn, needed planed level.. [attachment=53487] Skinny chisels wanted to wiggle around in the slots a bit, so... [attachment=53488] A Forstner bit was sized up...and.. [attachment=53489] The slots were opened up, as well...as being in the back of a case, I can't lift a chisel straight up and out of the rack....so, to keep said chisel IN the slots.. [attachment=53490] A Hinged Keeper will be used...Open up to get a chisel...then.. [attachment=53491] Close the keeper. Half of the skinny chisels are of the Socket style....decide to run a countersink bit... [attachment=53492] And now the chisel will sit nicely in the slot. Brace Drill is a Millers Falls No. 1950, Buck Rogers....that Large counter sink won't even cut warm butter...will need a good sharpening, someday.. With both racks about done, I can figure out how deep a case to build....in theory [attachment=53493] And rip the 4 sides of the box to width.. [attachment=53494] And cut them for length... Stay tuned...the corners of the case are 1/2" through dovetails....should be fun? RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - stav - 01-14-2025 I'm thinking you will need additional slots for future purchases as well. I'm surprised that little hinge was able to hold the weight of those chisels. RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-15-2025 I am pretty much set as far as Mortise chisels go. Hinge wasn't working all that great. So..Grab a few Lay out tools.. [attachment=53495] And lay out Pins first.... [attachment=53496] Set in the vise a bit lower...get the Shop Stool ready [attachment=53497] Run the handsaw for a little bit.. [attachment=53498] Lay the Pin Board on the Chopping block.. [attachment=53499] Clamp it to the block, knife the base line a few times...starting with the Show Face... [attachment=53500] Chop about...1/2 way down, leave the front "porch" for support....then flip over, and chop from the Inside face.. [attachment=53501] Chopping the outside face first, prevents any "blowouts" when I finish removing the waste...a file to smooth the rough areas...then.. [attachment=53502] I mark all 4 sides as to what is the inside face. So, when I stand the Pin Board up on the Tail Board, I make sure inside matches inside. Then a Needle SHARP No. 2 Pencil traces around each Pin.... [attachment=53503] And mark where the waste sides on the lines are.... Ready for a saw and chisel? Stay tuned.. RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-15-2025 Since I am terrible sawing at an angle other than plumb...and can't see where the saw blade is going... [attachment=53504] I use the Bandsaw...trying to leave the lines, cutting on the waste side. Then Nibble away until I reach the next line... Then a bit of file work to even out the saw marks...and then a dry fit.. [attachment=53505] Will it fit right off the saws, without any chisel to pare the fit? A few taps with a Mallet... [attachment=53506] Hmmm. Repeat all the above, for the other 3 corners.. [attachment=53507] And, make sure the rack will fit inside the case... [attachment=53508] I think that will do. This rack goes at the back of the case, up against the solid wood panel. The other rack will hang on the inside of the door. Currently? Have been working on the panel for the back.... Made a bit of sawdust, cut and rip 4 pieces.. [attachment=53509] Edges needed planed, for a tighter glue joint.. [attachment=53510] Millers Falls No. 8, Type 2 seemed up to that task...spread a bit of glue, add a few clamps... [attachment=53511] Let this sit until the glue cures. And the Shop gets warm enough to work in, again.... Next? [attachment=53512] These 2 will get made into a door for the Case.. Stay tuned... RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-18-2025 Ok..those 2 planks for the Door? Longer one was cut about a 1/4" longer than the other one. Since I did not want to reset the fence on the tablesaw, I simply cut to the line on the bandsaw ( my Bifocals helped) then, both blanks were run through the tablesaw...right down the (almost) center... The now 4 pieces needed to be jointed... [attachment=53519] Then some glue was spread around/along the mating edges... [attachment=53520] Vise acting as both a 3rd hand, and a caul.. But, BEFORE all of that could be done...had to remove the back panel from that vise....add a bead of glue to the case...and clamp the 2 pieces together.. [attachment=53521] ( note: I did NOT glue the 4 corners of the case..1) they are tight enough as is, and 2) will allow some movement with the back..in theory) [attachment=53522] A look inside...before I add the "Smalls" chisel rack to the back. [attachment=53523] Will let both "Glue-ups" sit a day or so... Stay tuned.. RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-19-2025 A Busy, Busy, BUSY day, today? [attachment=53536] When one HAS to sweep up at the end of the day....Bench is still a mess.. [attachment=53537] Some of the tools in use... [attachment=53538] And...because I was in too big of a hurry the other day, and forgot to add glue TO all them dovetails...BEFORE I glued the case to the back of the case...I needed to add corner Brackets...and so that the door sits flush...those brackets needed "let in" at the edges.. [attachment=53539] Then start by adding the hinges... [attachment=53540] Then a Latch.. [attachment=53541] Then add the inside chisel rack.. [attachment=53542] With glue...and some counter sunk screws through the back of the case.. [attachment=53543] BTW: The Door center was made a bit long...in order to add a curve to the top edge... [attachment=53544] Inside rack has a hinge "Keeper"...right now it is being held shut with a screw....intend to add a threaded insert and a thumbscrew later... Right about here...there was a Break for Lunch.... Stay tuned.. RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-19-2025 Alrighty..lunch is over with (Burp!) Back to work.. [attachment=53545] With this goal in mind.... Rack needed some work, to let the chisels sit in it a little better... Ends of the rack needed "adjusted" to allow the door to close properly....took a couple tries... First "location" for the rack was 1" too high up on the door....so, there are 2 rows of counter sink holes...lower set does have screws in them.. So, how does one cover that up? Hmmm.. [attachment=53546] How about a Brass Name Plate? Maybe tomorrow, I can start on a finish of some sort.....debating whether to add a "Door Handle" ..... Stay tuned... RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - AHill - 01-20-2025 Bandit, I like your box builds. Just curious, though. How many boxes have you built so for for tool storage? Seems like you're always busy building boxes. RE: Mortise Chisels getting a new home? - bandit571 - 01-21-2025 Maybe a dozen? Tools come into the shop without a case...so..I build a case for them. Been too cold down in the Basement Wood shop, this week.... |
