Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-24-2025

That was long ago made from Pallet Wood.....was stuck into a corner....and the cats used the legs for scratching posts..
[attachment=53804]
Table top was too small...let a lot of stuff drop down to the floor...and..I NEED to clean up the area on top of the table..as it has become a "Catch-all"....The DVD Cabinet sitting on it, won't close properly..so it will also get worked on....

Lumber run..
[attachment=53805]
$30  spent....four  1 x 6 x 6' Maple planks, and nine 1 x 6 x 5' Ash planks...some of the Maple looked good..
[attachment=53806]
And one out of the 4 did not....had a couple issues..
[attachment=53807]
Decided to use the Maple  1 x 6s to build a slightly taller, and slightly wider Table....as the old table was also too short...

Sent the best of the 1 x 6 Maple to the shop...
[attachment=53808]
2 out of 3...the 3rd one?
[attachment=53809]

These are a bit too long for me to cut on the tablesaw....safely.....need 1 x 6 x 26" blanks...so, mark a cut line..
[attachment=53810]
Grab a saw down off the overhead hook...
[attachment=53811]
Add, make a few cuts..
[attachment=53812]
Until I wind up with 4 blanks to make a top top out of...
[attachment=53813]
And that will do it for a days work...

Stay tuned..

Never seen that saw in any of your builds before.  Although you pretty much own your own tool shop, so there is probably a lot you haven't featured here before.

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-24-2025

Saw is 9ppi, blade is 18" long, wood for it's Frame is Maple..sharp, cuts fast, cuts straight...comes in handy.

None of the4 blanks had parallel edges...set up the tablesaw to do a few rips..skinning off as little as I could....try again...
[attachment=53814]
Getting closer....brought out the No. 8c..to do a bit of jointer work..
[attachment=53815]
No....that is NOT a crack...look at the shavings....that is a black stripe of a Spalt...
Checked with a straight edge..
[attachment=53816]
Once I got the first edge straight and square...I could use it to check the next plank...
[attachment=53817]
Looking for any gaps...
[attachment=53818]
Got to this point, laid a LARGE square at the ends. Marked a line across to see where to trim the ends at...

At this point it was ready for glue and clamps...but....had another task waiting to get done, and it NEEDED the use of the Tablesaw..

Stay tuned..

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-24-2025

Next task?   Cleared off the top of the Tablesaw...set the rip fence for an 1-3/4" width....once I had rough cut the boards to 32" lengths...and then I could rip 8 leg blanks....
[attachment=53819]
Let these sit a spell....pre-set 3 pipe clamps...
[attachment=53820]
Tablesaw is now a work table...the 3rd clamp?
[attachment=53821]
Was sat over here, out of the way, for now...

Laid out the 4 blanks for the Top....spread some glue along a few edges...."rotate" one pipe clamp up, re-align the blanks, and snug the clamp up...repeat for clamp #2....Once they were almost tight, #3 clamp showed up...
[attachment=53822]
For some odd reason, that pipe clamp works best at an angle.....nice part about have the handle where they are?
[attachment=53823]
I can set out, glue and clamp the blanks for the 4 legs...letting the excess glue just drip down for a bit...
[attachment=53824]
Since there is a nice pile of sawdust down below...
[attachment=53825]
Needed a place to stash the first 3 leg glue-ups...so...
[attachment=53826]
Those 2 squares on the top of the Shop Stool?
[attachment=53827]
Are just cut-offs....not sure what I will use them for....yet..

Letting things sit a day...Shop is closed on Mondays....so..

Stay tuned....

Tasks for the rest of the week:

Remove the clamps from the 4 leg blanks
Clean up the glue joints
Square the legs, and choose the best "show corner" as it will get a bead...
Taper 2 sides of each leg, plane the tapers smooth...

Lay out for the Mortises for the Aprons tenons to go into...

Should be enough for the rest of this week?

Tabletop will need squared up and given a Bread Board edge treatment....

Still need to mill 4 aprons....

Just a simple little Table...

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-25-2025

Errands to run, TODAY, according to the Boss....but, before we left the house....
[attachment=53832]
Clamps on the 4 leg blanks were removed....they are sitting here because...
[attachment=53833]
The pipe clamps needed removed from the Table top's panel...replaced with a couple cauls...

Them Pipe clamps are a bit cumbersome the haul around in my shop...even worse if I want to stash a panel out of the way, like this...
[attachment=53834]
Now it can sit here, out of the way...while I work on the 4 legs...and maybe even mill a few Aprons....

Stay tuned...

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-27-2025

Working on the leg blanks...
[attachment=53842]
Ok...plane off the globs of dried glue, and a couple high spots...set that edge against the fence, set to just barely skim off the other edge...then, reset the fence to 1-1/2" width, run the just skimmed edge against the fence....then rotate to peel off the worst looking of the 2 faces....repeat for each leg..
Next step..
[attachment=53843]
Both ends need to be trimmed..
[attachment=53844]
Gang them up, ends as close to match as I can get them...
[attachment=53845]
Another clamp to hold this mess against the miter gauge...
[attachment=53846]
Trim one end, rotate around to trim the other end...mark a cut line at 30-1/2"..
[attachment=53847]
And push the mess through the cut...

And, unless I need a leg to work on..these 4 will stay clamped together...while they get used to being...
[attachment=53848]
Square...
Stay tuned...

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-28-2025

Need to put a few things away..
[attachment=53852]
So I can sit this heavy box on the bench..
[attachment=53853]
And open it up..
[attachment=53854]
"Some assembly required"?   take a few items out..
[attachment=53855]
Main Stock, the 2 short rods...set the Fence aside for now....lock the rods in place with that screwdriver..next..
[attachment=53856]
A #23 Bead cutter....that needs a sharpening.   I hone the "back" and the quirk cutters ,only...
[attachment=53857]
Installed...then the sliding stock was slid into place..
[attachment=53858]
Even though I am not using the left quirk cutter, I still need to support it...then the fence was added..
[attachment=53859]
Rods go into the top holes, so that the fence can cover the left Quirk cutter.....should about ready to go?
[attachment=53860]
Test track on some scrap...showed the depth stop needed to be adjusted just a tad..
[attachment=53861]
Was cutting a little too deep when done....

Stay tuned...will be putting that plane and one other to good use...

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 02-28-2025

Reset the "Jig" that was holding the test track...and set the first leg blank on the bench..
[attachment=53862]
Unlike the test track, I do not have to overhang the edge of the bench....first step?
[attachment=53863]
I wanted a nice smooth surface...
[attachment=53864]
There is a "hold down" added, since all the weight will be out on the other edge...Make the 1st half of the bead...then rotate..
[attachment=53865]
And mill the other half...
[attachment=53866]
Details?
[attachment=53867]
Was fairly easy to do....as long as the plane doesn't clog up too badly..
[attachment=53868]
About every 3rd or 4th pass, a scratch awl to clear the shavings out...

Repeat for the other 3 legs..
[attachment=53869]

Stay tuned...will need to taper 2 faces of each of these legs, next...

RE: Need to replace an old Table - bandit571 - 03-01-2025

Tapering the legs...
decide on which end is to be the top of a leg....measure down 5"..
[attachment=53872]
Then down at the foot of the leg, and start line..draw a line between the 2 marks..
[attachment=53873]
I have an old Tinner's Ruler that I use as a straight edge...
[attachment=53874]
The Bandsaw is to take off the "bulk" of the waste...
[attachment=53875]
1st slice, rotate, repeat for the second cut...
[attachment=53876]
1st leg has it's tapers ready to plane...repeat for the other legs..
[attachment=53877]
Stopped before I did the last leg, as I wanted to make sure I was cutting the correct sides...
[attachment=53879]

Stand this mess up, on it's own 4 feet...no glue, just those clamps...
[attachment=53880]
As I had one more task to do, BEFORE they come apart to be planed...
[attachment=53881]
"T" stands for both Taper, and for Tenon.....as the Mortises for the Aprons Tenons go on the tapered faces....

So, later today ( I hope) I need to put this tool to work....
[attachment=53882]
WW2 Stanley No. 6c.....should be "Fun"....stay tuned...
