Barn for sale - MstrCarpenter - 03-20-2025
Hey friends, I'm looking for suggestions on where to post (advertise) a post and beam barn that has to be removed from the property. I know it can just be ripped down and thrown in dumpsters, but it seems a shame to do that. It may be more cost effective to give it away, assuming the recipient takes it all. I can have someone list it on Craigs list and Marketplace but is there anywhere more appropriate? It's in southeastern NH.

Some of the barns were made of timbers that are not available now.
If it is old enough to have been made of chestnut or some other desirable old-growth wood, you might be able to find someone to pay you to carry it away.

Do a google search for a business that sells reclaimed lumber and/or builds with it.
They're out there.
FWIW, I've removed enough of it, don't take long to figure out it can be a pita! When nails get driven into green white oak....they tend to rust, making removal very hard.

I like the idea of calling a professional shop that deals in barnwood to see if they can recommend somebody to take the barn away.
I'd be very careful of just advertising on CL or FB Marketplace. My fear is that some inexperienced amateur would jump in to remove the barn only to quickly find out how hard the work is or get hurt in the process leaving you with a pile of rubble or a liability issue, or both.
There is an elderly couple living across the highway from me; their place is within sight of my property. The pile of rubble that used to be a barn is a monument to the wrong guy starting the job. He lost interest after a while and just disappeared. That barn is now just a heap of decomposing wood. It's been so dry here that they are prevented from just torching the pile.

Forestry Forum has a pretty big timber frame following and I believe a bunch of the members are out east. Also, thru them or directly you might reach out to the Timber Framers Guild. I'd bet one of these leads would hook you up with someone that would at minimum take down and remove the structure at no cost to you. Next I would try a Facebook specific group, and as a last resort FBMarketplace or Craigslist.

Get in touch with Clint Harp—another HGTV guy, Restoration Road.
He works with some of the best and most experienced historic barn renovators in the country.
The other two people I think of are Kevin Durkin and Luke Larson.
Luke is based out of Vermont and would be a great fit.

Kevin Jenness over on SawMill Creek has a son who builds and rehabs timber structures. He may be interested in the building. He was involved with the restauration of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, and did a major restauration on a covered bridge in VT last year. You can contact Kevin at

Check with your insurance agent - you could be liable if someone is injured or killed. Last thing you want is to lose everything because you tried to give something away for free.
