Cleaning metal from sanding belt - Bencuri - 04-19-2025

I  have a bench grinder where the right side is a small belt sander. I think it can be clogged, because recently it heats up metal faster than before. I have a piece of POWERTEC sanding belt cleaner stick. Can you use that to clean metal from belts, or it can only clean sawdust? If not, how can I clean the belt on my machine?

This is that cleaner:

I wouldn't hesitate to try it. If it doesn't work it won't be a big deal.

Grinding metal with an abrasive belt can quickly ruin a belt intended for wood.  There are special belts designed for metal.  Seek those out and use them.  Metal does not get in the belt like wood will.  Maybe aluminum may get in there but that would be rare.

That gum rubber stick is great for wood sanding belts sometimes.  It won't resin streaks left by pine and the like.  I've used lacquer thinner for that but it is a time consuming mess with very little improvement .

That's what I would do. I can't see any harm, just that it may not work. I've used the belt cleaner stick on a drum sander and belt sander for wood, it works well for those uses.

Try reversing the belt before using the rubber gum stick.

For what it’s worth - WorkSharp used to send a small rubber block in their ws3000 kit to do exactly that.  Clean the sanding discs from metal taken off of chisels, planes and knives.
