Any comments on the Popes casket? - toolmiser - 04-27-2025
Watching various "news" reports, there was numerous mentions of a "simple wooden casket". Maybe that is how they describe it, but it wasn't ornate, but I didn't think it looked "simple". Multiple angles with interlocking joints, I could see a lot of craftsmanship in it. Some people didn't get credit for a beautiful piece of woodworking.

Lots of skill involved, but still a plain common design. They are never ornate.

The news did stress the "simple".
Being a woodworker, I would like to know:
What wood?
Who built it?
How much did it weigh?
When was it ordered?
How much did it cost?
I am not Catholic. But I respect the man's wishes to buried "near the people". At the same time, the actual burial cost must have been a fortune!

When i heard "simple" and saw news footage, the construction looked fairly complex, and the lack of adornment would highlight any flaws in the build. This morning, on another forum, someone posted a link to a you tube video. I watched, and it was well worth the time. I'll post the link below if that is allowable. About 15 minutes, and will answer several of Bill Holt's questions.

There's little doubt in my mind that a huge amount of craftsmanship went into the construction of that coffin. I watched closely trying to discern whether they used DY joints r box joints on the corners, i concluded they were DT joints, and I'm certain they didn't pull out a Leigh D$R to do them.
