Currently my grandson is just using a pocket knife to whittle.  I'm not sure he (nor I) know enough about carving to really know much about other options.  But he is quite artistic and rather persiste...

Dave, I note you have medium and fine files. Do these give you a pretty smooth finish or would you need to go to the "extra fine" file for that? I know there are always some trade-offs with tool use...
