I went to an auction several years ago ... they were selling 4' long by 12' long banded blocks of 4/4 8" chestnut boards. There we about 10 of them and IRRC they brought around $25/BF .. I really ...

Just cut a gap on one side so it can "break away" ... just be sure it is wide enough that it won't pinch ... just a thought ...

You could split the tenon and install a thin wedge ... leave it proud of the end of the tenon and push it into the hole with a lot of hide glue ... it will spread and capture the tenon ...

A flat sole is necessary ... so is a very sharp blade ... start by trying to take the thinnest shavings possible ...First I sight down the board to determine the flattest side and clamp that side...
