I can't comment on the dye, but I have always found maple to blotch fairly easily with oil stain. I would be sure to test it first. Ed

As Restorer said, shellac works well to encapsulate the smell, but you often have to do all the unfinished parts of the inside of the furniture piece for it to work. Ed
