Without knowing the shade of the wood I would consider chakta viga or pink ivory. Or, if the koa is on the darker side maybe cherry for the feature ring.

I thnk it would really depend on the designs of the feature rings. I wouldn't use holly next to koa because of the density difference and the possibility of the sanding dust from the koa staining the ...

Their is no rule but. there is someconsideration that needs to be done in the design process, The alignment on a feature ring usually looks better if you keep the number of feature ring segments cores...
