i use a staining pad, and i keep it in a covered paint can with mineral spirits.  wring it out, use it over and over.  works great.

for what it's worth, if a client asked me to build that table for $2300, i would tell them that it's at least twice that price for such a build.  at least.

i use 1.5mm maple edge banding, applied with the Conturo, and Odie's Oil as the finish.  it's easy to apply and blends in perfectly.

oh - and for the drawer front buttons - i use those with great result.  they are terrific, and by far the easiest way i've found to align and install inset drawer fronts.  strongly recommended.
