I usually use scrapers with that profile as sheer scrapers (handles dropped way down, corner of the tool on the tool rest so the sharpened edge presents about a 45* angle to the surface. Used that way...

Assuming the blanks were waxed while still green, I would not assume they are dry. Wax is very good at its job of slowing moisture loss. I don't do pepper mills but I wouldn't want to do them in green...

Other than more thickness to absorb vibration along the shaft, I don't see what the advantage of the step down design would be. I use sheer scrapers and negative rake scrapers extensively on bowls...

Sounds like a good saw with some useful extras, but the price is high for the market where I am. Unisaws come up in the 500-800 range somewhat regularly here.

Thanks. Table alignment actually ends up neutral in this case as I had to pull the top from the 3 hp in order to move it, so alignment will be happening either way. The new to me saw included a starre...
