My workbench top is 4" of Doug Fir. It's been in use (15+ hours a week) for five years without problem. Mine came from 20' 2x12s but your beams should be even better.

If you have another log blank with that kind of twisting growth, perhaps you could reflect that in a 'twisting' rim. (This from someone with lots of ideas and much less execution...)

To have evenly spaced dovetails after you cut the lid loose, space the dovetail where your cut will happen wider by the width of your grooving tool (/1/16, 1/8, etc.). This will look much better. DAMH...
