I would try Lexel. I used their waterproof adhesive and it’s been great. They advise it can take a week to fully cure.

For blotchy wood, I’ve used a 1-1/2 or 2 lb. cut of shellac. Freshly made from flakes. Super blonde should be good. I got mine from https://www.shellac.net years ago.

I was thinking you were over the edge for making this instead of buying lattice but it looks very good. And, it seems like you had fun making it—solving the challenges. Great job.

Depending upon how large the area, I would cut or route a shallow rectangle and patch it with matching hickory. It should blend in the best.
