All excellent ideas. Thank you, everybody. You've shown a way forward. I think I can do it, one way or the other.

Post: RE: measuring and replicating a long curve

To answer the last question first: Lake Michigan. Maybe I won't need the splash guard, but it would be good to have.  I might try balancing a yardstick at the highest point and then measuring every fe...

Post: measuring and replicating a long curve

I've got a problem that needs a better mind than mine. I need to make a splash guard for a rowing scull (an Alden 18) that's missing one. (They don't make spare parts.) I thought I would make it out o...

We're in Chicago, and our old gas water heater is starting to leak. We need to replace it. We thought about perhaps going tankless, although I don't know if it makes sense this far north, especially c...

Post: Should I get rid of my old Bosch router?

I've become increasingly attached to my Makita battery-operated tools, in part  because I usually work outside, and they're much easier to use under such circumstances. I recently got as a gift a smal...

Post: Wood question: spruce?

I picked up a long 2 x 6 recently that's pretty clear.  It's marked spruce, fir or pine, and it's from Canada. Is there any assumption I can make about the species given that it's from Canada? I'm bui...

I have access to some 1" thick wide cherry boards. They've just been cut. How long will it take them to air dry? Should I do it outside or inside? Anything I should be wary of?

Post: Oil finish--or something else?

I just picked up a used Maloof-style rocker that has a thin, low-luster finish. I'm thinking maybe it's an oil/wax finish of the kind Maloof used on the real article, but I've also seen lacquer finish...

I ended up getting the Makita, because I already have a drill and small circular saw. The saw isn't very powerful but it's handy for the small jobs that I use it for.
