If this is for hand tool work, expect to rely on holdfasts. My bench is 4" and holds them fine. This is not always true for thinner tops.

Every winter wood inside my house gets down to 6-7% MC, so any wood I use must be kiln dried down to that level at some point. If it has migrated back up to 10 or even 13% that is okay to work with.

Your real problem will be the cracking that is inevitable with woods that split easily. Drying can be done with fans or heat. stick it in a closed vehicle sitting in the sun and it will dry. |

Nice box although I am surprised you found white oak to be "fine grain". I think of that as what Hoadley called "diffuse porous" like fruitwoods or maple. Either way, it does make a fine looking box! |
