Very handy things to have -- back when Sears was dying I wandered through the tool section and they were closing out a nice 2"x42" sander that has really been useful.

How stressed will the screws be?  If much stress, the longer the better.  If not a lot a week should be plenty.   Pay attention to how hard it is when you're drilling the hole.  If it drills easily...

Did you use a really coarse "Planer" grit belt on sander?  I've used a 36 grit to do a similar job and it moved a LOT of wood in a hurry!

How many do you need to drill? Get some GOOD drill bits.  Use some oil.  Drill press if possible. As mentioned stainless can be soft or hard, depending on treatment.  Test and see what you've go...

I've used a 1" Forstner bit to show fresh wood on end and face of a board.  Take just a little off and you can see the color/grain lots better.
