I would use mortise and tenon. It’s a good place to do floating tenons.

You could use wooden buttons or figure 8 clips and plug the pocket holes.

Stupid question but isn’t it less expensive to make these using 1”X rather than ripping a 5”X5” posts? Or, is your overall thickness greater than that and closer to 1-1/2”?

What happened such that you have paint where you want bare wood for good gluing? I’ve used Lexel 6000 in places where no other adhesive would hold. However, it’s a mess and hard to clean up too.
