A granite lapping plate and wet/dry auto sandpaper works very well too.  I still think I get my best edges with an eclipse style jig or similar and running through 6-7 grits.

I would use a bead of polyurethane glue down the middle of the board only. Face nail with a 15 g finish nailer sparingly. Nails will allow for movement a bit better then a screw and be less apparent...

Call me crazy but my best mirrored backs and edges have came from scary sharp utilizing high quality automotive sandpaper up to 2000 grit progressing over 7 different grits: IIRC....400, 600, 800, 10...
