My opinion is if you're happy with what you have, stop there. I also think if you spend money on 4" spiral pipe and then change DCs, you will wish you had 6".

Face jointing is to flatten a board, and it sounds like yours are already there. I think I would just plane them to the desired thickness, jointing the edges for glue up.

It will depend on the condition of the existing finish. If it's peeling and flaking, you will have to scrape that off; that will show through the top coat unless it's smoothed out somehow...like a com...
