Versabond and Mapei both make very good products. Never had an issue with either brand. I usually use Versabond thinset and Mapei grout. I have used "Universal" thinset and didn't like working with it... |

When you applied the thinset, did you just swipe it on or did you really press it onto the tile and backer before you made your final swipe?

Toilet parts are cheap. I'd guess the filler valve is sticking closed. Reintroducing pressure by opening the service valve might jar the filler valve open. I'd start by replacing the filler valve. |

If a plumber installed the pipe, there is a P-Trap. If there wasn't a P-Trap, you'd probably smell sewage. My guess is you have lint clogging the P-Trap.
You should be using a lint trap on the disch... |
