I use a mixture of Tung Oil, bees wax, and citrus solvent. I have used turpentine in the past but hate the smell. The citrus solvent is much nicer smelling and to use. This is a food safe finish and... |

Looking at the end grain, I am going to say an oak of some type. I have some chestnut in the shop, and the end grain looks nothing like that. |

If I was using Waterlox, I would not worry about the cost of it. A can of it goes a long way, then you have the issue of storing it in smaller and smaller containers so it doesn't gel.

If I was using a jig, I would do half blind DTs all the way around. The groove can be placed so it is hidden. |

I apply wax with the gray scotchbrite pads. That eliminates getting metal shards in the finish.
