It doesn't make the saw safer, so I'd rather spend the extra on a sawstop saw. It also doesn't work on most crosscuts. Simon

and with its skew blade, the slicer can probably work like a skew block plane too! Perhaps Bandit will show us how he turns a rusty mandolin block plane into a shiny armor after his next treasure ...

rather easily....Have you read the actual tip, Scoony? A typical pen blank is 2-1/4" long about 1/2" to 3/4" wide. Rounding a square blank with your bare hand on a plane mounted upside down is easy...

I'm afraid not...but I feel confident that if it's slow and labor-intensive, he wouldn't use it to make 100 or 200 dowel pins, the kind of number of pens woodturners whom I personally know have turned...

Tom, There's a difference between doable and being practical . That's why I use a handplane and not a chisel if I want to flatten a board. Or, use a drill press to do some turning in an emergen...

In other words, the so-called tip is impractical, to say the least. Wait, I should try the magazine with my own tip: use sandpaper instead of a handplane......which well is at least safer!!! Simon

So how many pens did you make over the years using a handplane, and how long did it take to shape two blanks? Did you wear a Kevlar glove? (The tip as published is meant to do round pens.) Simon

I flipped the pages of the shop tips in a magazine that belongs to my neighbor. Published: mount the plane upside down in a vise , and use it to shape pen blanks with a bare hand to make pens. Wow.....
