+3 on Timbermate. Best I’ve used in 35+years for small fills.  For really large voids / repairs , Water Putty is still my go to.

No trick really, it's the wrong tool (bit) for the job. You'd be just as well off with a splined miter (biscuit) or even a brad nailed miter and they'd be much faster and safer and easier to make.

What you want is not realistic.  Clean it , then paint it if you don’t want to put in the time / effort /expense of prepping it correctly to clear coat it.
