I paid $1350 for my used 2 hp 1642 about 6 years ago. It needed a little cleaning up but has been problem free.

Black Locust would probably be my choice. I have fence post still solid after 40 years of wet/dry cycles, all just stuck into a hole in the ground with no sand or cement.

Thanks to all. The 8/4 may well be overkill and I can certainly save a few bucks by using 6/4 and glue up the blanks. Sounds like a plan.
