A really handy option is to remove the small tube from the overflow tube and place it under the edge of the tank lid - pointing out.  This is especially helpful when visiting a friend hosting a party....

Two bolts (nuts).  One water line.  Pull the toilet. Better access.  No scratches. The wax ring probably needs replaced anyway. Invite the "guests" over to "help".
