Yeah, that can happen.  I'm about to ship out this pre-1917 Disston 16, 26", 5 1/2 rip; and I was really impressed by the quality of the steel; when sharpened up and set, its a beast as well, nib is gone and it has some rust patches on the plate despite polishing, but for half the price of the Pax.......
