Yes, the dowel goes thru so you can figure 8 a rope. As mentioned, that is not generally seen on planes this size.

Here's the update. I took the high spot down a bit and sharpened the blade.




I ground the blade square and discovered that it is laminated and is VERY hard on the end. The plane pulls some nice shavings, even with the big mouth.






I also cleaned it up with turpentine. Waxing comes later.



Next task is to make a new wedge.
