I've used Brian Boggs' Ebonizing procedure on several projects with good success...

This is (cheap) poplar ebonized using vinegar, steel wool, and tannic acid.  Dark black.  Brian Boggs method.  The stain goes about 1/32" into the wood.

Blackberry, what are you trying to blacken? Whats the location of the finial project? What is the project?
