ok, another possible reason for a lackluster response, not everyone uses a cord reel. I don't have one at home and we don't use them at work. Only 1 shop that I ever worked in used them. Now, that didn't stop me from reading this thread, I just don't have any solid advice to give, sorry.
I no longer build museums but don't want to change my name. My new job is a lot less stressful. Life is much better.

I bought my reel at home depot probably fifteen years ago for most likely less than 30 bucks or so. It still works fine. If it died I'd do the same thing again.
I agree some of these things are ridiculously priced and I certainly wouldn't waste the money.

For my electrical extension cords I use "Wonder Winders." Currently I have three. One in the shop, the garage and behind the house. You can get them at Menards, Northern Tool or (like everything else) on Amazon. I highly recommend them.
