Trying out a different type of Dovetail joint

Day 3 had been changed to Day #4.....too tired to work on a Monday....

Same as before....just taking things a little slower....decided there wasn't any need to rush things...still, almost made one mistake...
 

   
layout line was wrong, by about 1/4" too far back....got that corrected, in time....

   
Made a better pin lay out...then the hand saw..

   
trying not to over cut too much...then the Kerf Knife was driven in...

   
Then do a bit of chopping..

   
Then, use these pins to lay out the tails..

   
That might be a problem...as it takes 3 cuts at the corners.. 

   
Was soon able to do a dry fit...or at least start one...
 

   
gaps were looking a bit better, though.

"hey, yer end grain's showing!"   Oh well,
then just repeat all the above...and then a dry fit of all 4 corners..

   
May just finish this up as a small box?

Decided to go ahead and make this into a box....needed to plough some grooves..
 

   
Strange, curly shavings...the Stanley 45 usually makes noodles...so..

   
Ah, a plough plane....

Each side of the box get 2 grooves....then a plywood panel for either the top or bottom...

   
Test fit...then mark for length....then make a second matching panel....a bit of dry fit...

   
To make sure both panels fit...

   
then re-assemble with some glue...and a few clamps,  just a few
 

   

let this sit overnight.   Tomorrow, I might set up the Stanley #45, as a bead cutter....run a pair of beads all the way around...then saw between the beads to split off the lid

Well, had to clean up the top of the bench...was getting a bit full...again
 

   
needed a bit more elbow room....clamps came off, and were hung back up...which left..

   
Hmmm, worked my way around all four sides, until they all looked like this...

   
And, also worked on the soon to be lid...

   
Then, set up the Stanley 45 with a #23 bead cutter..

   
And form a bead all the way around, near the top of the box..

   
Then adjust the fence to make a second bead right below the first bead..

   
Had thought about using the Bishop saw again...wasn't quite up for that much Cardio today.....used the bandsaw..

   
And got "rewarded" with a wavy cut....we have ways to remove waves...

   
The No. 5 Jack is long enough, I can span across the box...and remove all the high spots, from both the lid, and the box....

Next?   Due to them beads being in the way...had to do the hinges a little differently...means I had to chisel out spots to set the brass hinges into....

   
Yes, they are brass hinges, not copper ones....with brass screws, no less....this was the easiest way I found, to attach a lid to a box......everything solidly held in place, both are at the same height...and the lid even shuts like it is supposed to
 

next....a way to keep the lid closed...

   
But, them beads were in the way, again....had to incise around things for a better fit....chisel and a gouge.....seemed to do the trick...

   
And that will do it, for this box.   Other than add a finish to it...box is done.    May try this dovetails again.....not too bad to do, actually....just need to take my time, doing the layouts.

Box only stands 3-1/4" tall...

   
7" long on the front and back..

   
Ends are 6" wide....just enough room inside..

   
Almost like it was designed for this tool kit?

   
Time to close the lid on this little box....Gunstock stain, brush on, wipe back down....then a single coat of BLO

Nice one! Variation on a theme is the secret mitred dovetail. I keep thinking of doing them on the next piece I make but can't bring myself to spend so much time and effort on something that gets completely concealed
