I’m going to build a staked low bench for woodworking and sitting, and want to face glue two 2x12s for thickness. I remember seeing somewhere that there’s a “best” way to orient the planks, but I can’t remember if it’s bark sides in or bark sides out.
Any knowledge from the group appreciated!

I do not remember either, but Chris Schwarz recent book about workbenches (very nice and free download available as well) has some discussion about that and the pictures of leg vise chop or vise jaws constructed this way.
Also, since you aim for around 3in thickness, maybe worth considering glue-up of "2x4" like it is sometimes done for workbench tops - from plain-sawn boards you get quarter-sawn appearance.

Bark side can be either or. Just make them opposite.

Thanks, guys.
I looked in Schwarz’s book and didn’t see anything specific. I’m guessing that when picking either/or, I’d probably be better off with having any tiny bit of cupping in the planks face away from each other, so I’m pulling the edges together rather than trying to push the middle together.
